Sustainable Development Goals

Biophilic Design isn’t just about pretty plants and nice wall paint colours, it is about using design to create healthy, inspiring environments for LIFE. Biophilic Design aims to use sustainable materials by default as we encourage use of wood grain, plants to reduce VOCs, air flow through windows, better acoustics, natural lighting and so on.

By encouraging us all to be more mindful of how we bring nature into the way we design our homes, workplaces, hospitals, schools, towns and cities we will have a phenomenal and beneficial impact on our health and wellbeing which in turn will have a positive impact on the environment. By improving the quality of our planet we will have a better quality of life on so many levels. “I see Biophilic Design as a cyclical design concept. We create healthier environments to live, work and play in we will encourage a respect and understanding of the beauty of nature by bringing plant life closer to our daily spaces, bringing the simple pleasure of fresh air to our families through an open window, better tunable lighting at work needing less energy, healthier paints with less VOCs creating less CO2 and pollutants into the atmosphere… the list goes on.” Dr Vanessa Champion, editor, Journal of Biophilic Design, Member of the United Nations Association - UK.

At the Journal of Biophilic Design we strive to uphold and support the UN Sustainable Development goals, focussing on 7 of them as illustrated here (credit the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs).
